Harrisburg Twitterati are Totally Amazing

There’s something in the water in Central PA… more likely it’s in our net connection because the social media types around here are basically the greatest people you’ll ever tweet.

I don’t know if it’s the tweetups or the smaller city feel… I have no idea what it is, but we have a phenomenal community. I’m talking primarily about Twitter– I’m not really that aware of the blogHarrisburg scene or PennLive or anything like that, but I’m (obviously) a totally twitter fanatic. Today, for example, we started out with a really intense discussion about tipping ettiquite, prompted by our very own Daniel Victor’s recent article. There were at least half a dozen of us weighing in with our own thoughts and experiences. Just a bit ago we started up again– this time talking about flirting. Is it appropriate to flirt during an interview? How do we define flirting? And so on. Interestingly, Dan was again a catalyst for this discussion. Dan, I think you may be the glue that holds us together.

What’s great about this group of tech geeks is that we’re all very involved in our little community. When we see two of our friends tweeting about something it doesn’t take long for more of us to join in the fun. This happens all the time. I would say at least six times a week there are 4 or more hbg twitterers having a discussion about any number of things online. Even better, we’ve taken it to a more personal level. We have developed not only an online community, but a real life one too. Many of us have met at tweetups, and for some of us, the relationships have only moved forward from there. At the first tweetup I attended everyone (jokingly) gave me a hard time about being 20– the young one in the group, and more importantly, not allowed to drink! I’m still getting teased (and poking fun at myself) and having a great time doing it because that’s how friends interact. They joke with each other. Maybe my favorite joke is that Dan is my new big brother. Over the past month or so Dan has become a great friend whom I certainly wouldn’t have met without twitter.

You can say what you want about twitter’s utility in business, but if you ask me, this is social networking at its finest.

What do you think about our online community? Do you think we’re outside the norm? Non-harrisburg people, what do YOU think? What is your experience with the online community in your area?

I’d say it sounds impressive, mostly because it seems to have formed on its own. Organically. Like magic. The magic of Twitter.
Not sure your success would translate to a larger city. Or a teeny tiny one.
Do you plan the tweetups on Twitter? Or defer to a more formal site that handles invites/RSVP’s?

We plan them on twitter… we start talking them up a week or so in advance to try to make sure everyone who might be interested hears about it.
